Intaglio Printmaker
OVERVIEW
The mid-level Intaglio Printmaker will produce high-quality copperplate prints, with a primary focus on bulk production, consistency, and meeting production deadlines. The role requires strong technical skills in traditional intaglio printing and the ability to troubleshoot and maintain high standard quality throughout production runs. The Printmaker will work out of rented commercial or academic studios.
Columbus Cartography creates modern maps and other prints using traditional cartographic and printmaking techniques. The Printmaker will contribute to the development and production of our maps and other printed works, including plate preparation, detailed etching and engraving, and research into historical printing methods.

COMPENSATION
$28 - $33 per hour, depending on experience
Paid every two weeks or completion of project
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Produce high-quality intaglio prints from copper plates using an etching press
Handle bulk production runs, often printing dozens of impressions from the same plate
Prepare plates for printing, including wiping, inking, cleaning, and registration
Mix and manage inks and maintain consistent color and coverage
Prepare and handle printmaking paper appropriately for intaglio printing
Set up, operate, clean, and maintain an etching press and related studio equipment
Inspect finished prints for quality, consistency, registration, plate wear, and defects
Troubleshoot printing problems and adjust technique as needed
Remove scratches and other defects
Maintain an organized and clean printmaking workspace
Track production quantities and communicate progress and material needs
Work efficiently when production schedules require short turnaround times or accelerated deadlines.
Collaborate with the Columbus Cartography team to maintain consistent quality across editions.
Create detailed sketches to be etched/engraved on metal plates
Conduct research on historical cartographic printing methods
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have regular access to a printing studio
Must be able to accept direct critiques
May be required to work evenings and weekends
Professional, studio, academic, or significant independent experience with copperplate etching and printing
Demonstrated experience operating an etching/intaglio press
Strong understanding of inking and wiping techniques
Excellent attention to detail and quality control
Ability to work independently and manage production priorities
Online portfolio with printing examples
Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art or proven etching and engraving experience
Advanced degree in Fine Art preferred
3+ years of experience preferred
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Required
Advanced experience using traditional intaglio printing techniques, inks, presses, etc.
Advanced experience with lettering
Ability to work both independently and with a small team
Ability to accept constructive criticism and make necessary adjustments or modifications
Ability to meet project deadlines
Preferred
Knowledge of traditional cartographic production techniques and methods
Knowledge of local and international geography
Experience with watercolor painting
LOCATION
Greater Washington, D.C. Maryland, or Virginia preferred
TRAVEL REQUIRED
< 30% for training and other purposes
Studio rental expenses will be reimbursed by the company
